Rules 13th edition

The main changes introduced with this edition include bigger prizes for the winner and the runner-up in each category. We’ve also added eight RAW CATEGORIES for which a RAW file is required in order to participate and two OPEN CATEGORIES for which a raw camera is not required, so that photos taken with compact cameras, smartphones and tablets are eligible for the contest.

 

Article 1 – ORGANIZATION: Oasis magazine and AITN group present Oasis Photo Contest 2015, the international prize dedicated to nature and wildlife photography, for amateur and professional photographers worldwide. The following people cannot participate in the competition: members of the jury and their relatives, AITN group employees and OASIS publishing house Il Corriere.net srl employees.

 

Article 2 – JURY: The jury will select and classify the best works at its sole discretion. Images in which it is presumed that animals were harmed will be rejected. The verdict of the jury is incontestable; it will be based upon the technical, naturalist and environmental relevance of the photos. Photos that present technical deficiencies will receive negative feedback, in spite of their natural value. The names of the members of the jury members will be announced on the website on the JURY section. Photos entering the final selection will be voted by internet users who will decide the winner of the OasisWeb Prize.

 

Article 3 – CATEGORIES: The competition is divided into 10 categories. In 8 of these categories contestants needs to supply the RAW file in order to qualify for the category prizes. Photos sent for this categories compete also for the general prizes. In the remaining 2 categories, contestants don’t need to supply RAW file; photos sent for this categories compete for category prize only. Each section is indicated with a specific letter that is used for encryption of files sent.

CATEGORIES IN WHICH ORIGINAL FILE IS REQUIREDIn the following 8 categories, the author has to supply RAW file, original (not edited) jpeg file or jpeg sequence, negative or diapositive (for scanned images) in case photo enters final selection.

P) LANDSCAPES Images showing natural habitats. They can be either wild landscapes or landscapes modified by the human presence. (farms, dwellings, roads…)

M) MAMMALS It refers to images that feature mammals in a natural state, it can be wildlife pictures or portraits, with the exception of bats, that should be submitted in Birds and Bats category, and whales underwater, that should be submitted in Underwater Photography category. Pictures of whales taken from a boat belongs to this category. Any photo portraying plant or animal underwater belongs to Underwater Photography category

U) BIRDS AND BATS Images that show birds or bats in their natural state, being wildlife photography or portrait. Photos depicting birds in immersion underwater should be submitted in Underwater Photography category.

T) ALL THE OTHER ANIMALS This category is for all the other species that are not included in the aforementioned sections (P, M, S, A and U.) This section would be for reptiles, amphibians, arthropods, invertebrates, shellfish, annelids, arachnids, insects, myriapods… Images of fishes taken from a boat (flying gurnard) or from the ground (salmons jumping) belong to this category.

F) STORYBOARD It refers to five or more images linked together by a logical sequence. The subject must be developed by a minimum of 5 images and a maximum of 9. The photos can be taken in sequence or in different moments but strictly connected with each other, and they must tell a story about nature, wildlife, ethology or natural environments and territory.

G) PEOPLE includes images that show indigenous peoples or tribes and ethnicity all over the world, in particular people living in the wilderness with primal traditions and costumes.

S) UNDERWATER PHOTOGRAPHY Underwater photography is the process of taking photographs under the water with underwater technical equipment. Photos can be taken in freshwater or marine environment. (Underwater flora, fishes, whales submerging, amphibian or birds submerging).

V) PLANTS It‘s for the images that represent flowers, plants, mushrooms either taken with macro photography techniques or with classic techniques

CATEGORIES IN WHICH ORGINAL FILE IS NOT REQUIRED

R) OPEN NATURE Includes pictures portraying natural environment, landscapes, flowers, plants and mushrooms

A) OPEN ANIMALS It refers to animals (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, echinoderms, insects, crustaceans, annelids, mollusks, sponges) being either domestic or in the wild or in captivity (animal rescue centre, wildlife parks, zoos)

 

Article 4 – IMAGE TYPES: All works must show an accurate reflection of the subject and the scene just as they appeared to the author at the moment of shooting. Digitally altered photos that were modified beyond optimization purposes will be disqualified (except for works submitted in open categories). Adjustments of color, contrast, brightness and sharpness, removal of dust and scratches and cutting are accepted. Panoramic pictures at 180 degrees are accepted. Focus stacking is also accepted. A crop of 50% maximum on original image area is accepted. The addition, duplication, deletion or moving of objects and pixels in pictures won’t be accepted, nor will the use of artistic filters and special effects.

 

Article 5 – FILES SUBMISSION: Photographs shall be sent only as digital files; analogue photographs will be accepted only if digitized in the required format. Submitted files have to be in jpg format. Long side of photos has to measure 3.000 pixel at least. Each photograph can submit photos to many sections until the number of submitted photos matches the amount payed to enter the competition. A maximum of 3 photos can be submitted in each category with exception of “Storyboard” category, for which a minimum of 5 photos and a maximum of 9 photos has to be submitted.

 

Article 6 – RAW FILE RULES: Authors must keep the original files, as produced by the camera, in RAW, TIFF, JPG, or DNG format, or as negatives or slide films for photos submitted in the following categories: landscapes, mammals, birds and bats, all the other animals, storyboard, people, underwater photography, plants. After Jury examination, all nominees have to supply the aforementioned original file (ff the author didn’t keep the RAW or DNG files, they will have to present the shots that followed and preceded the image in question) otherwise they could be excluded from competition. RAW file must keep the same name of the photo sent by the jury to the nominee when they require it. To participate in the Open Nature and Open Animals category RAW file is not required. Consequently, photos taken with compact camers, smartphones and tablets can take part into the competition.

 

Article 7 – REGISTRATION: Registration to the competition can be done by filling out the form on the site www.oasisphotocontest.com. This procedure gives the user a code (an author code) needed for all steps of the competition. When registering, it’s very important to enter a valid email address so the system can send your author code and the password which are necessary to have access to your personal account. Submissions sent by traditional mail, email or any other way won’t not be accepted. Registration, payment and files submission can take place at the same time or at different times. Registration is considered complete once the registration fee is received.

 

Article 8 – PAYMENT: Payment can be sent only after receiving the author code from the website system. The registration fee is 25 euros for a maximum of 3 photos can be submitted for each category of the Contest (with exception of Storyboard category, where a minimum of 5 photos and a maximum of 9 photos is required). Author can submit photos in any category. 4 payment methods are provided. Fee can be payed online on our website with credit card or paypal. Fee can also be payed offline with bank transfer or postal payment slip, writing author code down in the field of the reason for order. Payment details will be sent by email after completing registration.

During the registration phase, you can order the official catalog of the contest at a special of just 16 euros instead of 30 euros plus the regular shipping charges (for Italy, the shipping costs is €4, with express mail) Registration allows you to buy only one special priced catalog for user.

 

Article 9 – SUBMISSION OF IMAGES: Photographs shall be sent only as digital files. They can be sent online through the website’s submission form or they can be mailed out on a CD, DVD, or USB stick to the our office in: AITN, Via Fornace Sorba 2, 12051, ALBA (CN), Italy. During the process of uploading the photos online the system assigns a special code to the files and the images are renamed by it. If the files are to be sent by traditional mail, they have to be manually encoded and saved with their new system name before being sent on the CD,DVD, or USB stick. The name of the files should follow this pattern: A999X1 where A999 (one letter and three numbers) is the author code that’s generated by the system and emailed to the author after the first step of registration is done, X is the letter that stands for the section (each section is represented by a letter) and 1 is the progressive number of the photo (since users can only send three images per section, number 1 will go to the first submitted photo, 2 will go to the second photo and 3 for the third image). If using traditional mail images must be sent with the printable form found on the registration page of the site. The printable form is a PDF file which should be downloaded, printed and filled out in capital letters. The media, with the images presented for the competition, will not be given back to the participants.

 

Article 10 – IMAGE RIGHTS: Rights and ownership of images belong to authors. However, they shall authorize contest organizers the free use of their submitted photographs for the following purposes: publishing of the official catalog of the contest, publishing on websites related to contest, projections during promotional events related to contest, exhibitions of winning photographs that take place at the end of the competition. Exhibitions panels will be auctioned at a charity event when exhibition tour will be over. All proceeds will go to a solidarity project. Oasis magazine will publish winning photos in the report that will be written at the end of the contest. Winning and featured photos will be available to newspapers interested in publishing contest results.

Authors will be credited every time their images are used.

 

Article 11 – PRIZES: Three general prizes will be awarded:

International Oasis Photographer 2017, awarded to the general winner; he will get the prestigious Oasis Photo Contest bronze Trophy, a prize money of €2500 (consisting of a check for €1500 plus an attendance allowance for award ceremony worth €1000), a stay in Botswana, for 6 days, by Safari Essence, a voucher for awards dinner (valid for 2 people) and a voucher for a 2 overnight stays in a hotel located where award ceremony will take place (valid for 2 people). The winner will be chosen among all works submitted to RAW categories (landscapes, mammals, birds and bats, all the other animals, storyboard, people, underwater photography, plants).

Italian Oasis Photographer 2017: awarded to the best photo whose author is Italian; he will get the prestigious Oasis Photo Contest Trophy, a prize money of €1500 (consisting of a check for €1000 plus an attendance allowance for award ceremony worth €500), a voucher for awards dinner (valid for 2 people) and a voucher for a 1 overnight stay in a hotel located where award ceremony will take place (valid for 2 people). The winner will be chosen among all works submitted to RAW categories (landscapes, mammals, birds and bats, all the other animals, storyboard, people, underwater photography, plants).

Oasis Magazine 2017 Award: awarded from Oasis editorial staff and chosen among all works. The winner will get the prestigious Oasis Photo Contest Trophy, a prize money of €1000 (consisting of a check for €500 plus an attendance allowance for award ceremony worth €500), a voucher for awards dinner (valid for 2 people) and a voucher for a 1 overnight stay in a hotel located where award ceremony will take place (valid for 2 people). The winner will be chosen among all works submitted to RAW categories (landscapes, mammals, birds and bats, all the other animals, storyboard, people, underwater photography, plants).

CATEGORY AWARDS: for each of the 10 categories the jury will award a first place prize, a runner up prize and 6 honorable mentions.

RAW CATEGORIES:

First Place Award will win the Oasis PhotoContest trophy, a prize money of €800 (consisting of a check for €500 plus an attendance allowance for award ceremony worth €500) , a voucher for awards dinner (valid for 2 people) and a voucher for a 1 overnight stay in a hotel located where award ceremony will take place (valid for 2 people).

Runner up award will win a prize money of €400 (consisting of a check for €200 plus an attendance allowance for award ceremony worth €200) , a voucher for awards dinner (valid for 2 people) and a voucher for a 1 overnight stay in a hotel located where award ceremony will take place (valid for 2 people).

Honorable mentions winner will get a prestigious attestation, a voucher for awards dinner (valid for 2 people) and a voucher for a 1 overnight stay in a hotel located where award ceremony will take place (valid for 2 people).

OPEN CATEGORIES:

First Place Award will win the Oasis PhotoContest trophy, a prize money of €500 (consisting of a check for €300 plus an attendance allowance for award ceremony worth €200) , a voucher for awards dinner (valid for 2 people) and a voucher for a 1 overnight stay in a hotel located where award ceremony will take place (valid for 2 people).

Runner up award will win a week-long stay in the region of Langhe (Italy) (valid for 2 people), a voucher for awards dinner (valid for 2 people) and a voucher for a 1 overnight stay in a hotel located where award ceremony will take place (valid for 2 people).

Honorable mentions winner will get a prestigious attestation, a voucher for awards dinner (valid for 2 people) and a voucher for a 1 overnight stay in a hotel located where award ceremony will take place (valid for 2 people).

SPECIAL AWARDS

– Best mountain photograph Award Winner will get a stay for two persons for two days in the Dolomites mountains by Excelsior Dolomites Life Resort in San Vigilio di Marebbe (BZ).

– ”The wine hills” Award winner will get a stay for two persons for two days in the Langhe hills by “Tenuta Carretta” in Piobesi d’Alba (CN).

 

Article 12 – WORK OF THE JURY: The work of the jury will be as follows: identification of pictures that are qualified for the competition, 3 intermediate selection in order to proceed with the identification and second selection of pictures for semi-finalists. Then the jury will choose the finalists in order to choose the nominee for the awards. The jury will require raw file (where applicable) to the nominees; the author will also have to send a brief biography, a photo of themselves and an image captions. After examination of RAW files, jury will choose the winner for 2017 edition. The verdict of the jury is definitive and incontestable. Jury composition for 2017 composition will be published on website www.oasisphocontest.com.

 

Article 13 – CATALOG: For this year’s competition a catalog will be released at the end of the contes; it will be similar to the one produced for past editions of the contest. It will contain winning photos and finalist photos too. If requested on the registration page, the catalog will have a special price of €16 euros instead of regular price of €30. Registration allows you to buy only one special priced catalog for user (one copy per registration).

A gallery of all qualified works (with title and author specified) will be published on the website. The catalog is not a prize, so winners will not get one for free.

 

Article 14 – PRIVACY: Regarding the article n. 13 of Italian Legislative Decree n. 196. June 30, 2003, (the ‘Code concerning the protection of personal data’ hereinafter), that the personal data provided in the competition Oasis Photocontest 2014 will be saved by AITN on an electronic database and will be protected and treated in the most appropriate manner to ensure the security and confidentiality in accordance to what’s stated in the Code. The information provided will be used only for purposes strictly connected to the contest. To this end, the data may be published online on the contest’s website (www.oasisphotocontest.com) or in the catalog of the competition. The provision of data is necessary in order to participate in the competition. Authors may exercise their rights according to the article n. 7 of the Legislative Decree no. 196/2003 (including the rights to obtain confirmation of the existence of data concerning the author and the possibility of updating, correcting or deleting said data) by making a request to the legal owner of the database and AITN president, with registered office at Via Fornace Sorba 2, Alba (CN), Eugenio Ecclesiastico.

 

Article 15 – FINAL PROVISIONS: The guidelines Oasis Photo Contest 2015 concerning: rules of procedure, awarding of prizes, calendar of events and anything not covered here, refers to anything that’s published on the official website of the competition www.oasisphotocontest.com. Participation in the competition takes for granted the knowledge and acceptance of the rules and regulations found on this page in their entirety.

 

KIDS SECTION GUIDELINES

 

Article 1 – KIDS SECTION: The Kids section is reserved for boys and girls under the age of 18, therefore the consent of a parent is required to participate in this category, (the procedure for this is present on the site). This section is divided into 2 categories, Baby and Junior:

B) BABY This section is assigned to children that on 28th February 2017 have not yet reached the age of 14. J) JUNIOR This section is for those that on 28th February 2017 have not yet reached the age of 18.

 

Article 2 – IMAGES: In both section, Baby and Junior, kids can submit up to nine photographs, the subject may be picked from any of the categories found in the sections for grown ups: Landscapes, Mammals, Birds, All Other Animals, Plants, Storyboard, Underwater, People and Pets. Information pertaining to the rights of images can be found in Article 8 of the regular Guidelines for adults.

 

Article 3 – REGISTRATION: Registration for the competition can only be done by filling out the form on the website. The form is the same as that for adults. By entering the date of birth, users will be redirected to either the Baby or Junior category depending on their age. If the registration succeeds, users will get their code author sent by email. Please remember to enter a valid email address in the form. Submissions sent in any other way (email, fax, mail) won’t be accepted. Registrations, payment and submission of images can take place at the same time or at different times. Registration is considered complete once the participation fee is received.

 

Article 4 – PAYMENT: Payment should be made only after registration and upong receiving the author code from the system. The registration fee is 12 Euros. Fee can be payed online on our website with credit card or paypal. Fee can also be payed offline with bank transfer or postal payment slip, writing author code down in the field of the reason for order. During the registration you are given the possibility of preordering the Oasis PhotoContest catalog for the special price of 16 plus shipping costs. The system calculates the shipping costs depending on the country (shipping to Italy is €4) All catalogs will be sent to the addresses indicated in the registration form by the end of June 2017. Registration gives you the chance to pre-order only one copy of the catalog.

 

Article 5 – SUBMISSION OF IMAGES: Images must be submitted only through the form found on Submissions page. Only digital files will be accepted.

 

Article 6 – PRIZES: The jury will select a winner in the BABY category and a winner in the JUNIOR category. Both winners will receive a free stay for 4 days for the whole family (up to six members) in an Italian National Park (excluding travel expenses.) For participation is required the consent of an adult. The jury has the right to assign special prizes or to extend the ranking up to 3rd place.
